about the area

The Goldfields area

The goldfields area combines history, scenery, food, wine and some of the finest mountain bike tracks in Victoria.

The history

Gold was discovered at Forest Creek (Castlemaine) in September 1851 and the lure of gold attracted tens of thousands of diggers to this area and sparked a flood of mining that would later define Castlemaine.

The gold rush era indelibly shaped the goldfields and the monuments of those prosperous times provide a backdrop of authenticity and character across the region.

A visit to the Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park is a must for visitors with a particular interest in authentic gold history while Maldon is undoubtedly the best preserved of the gold mining towns in the district evoking a strong feeling of the past with its unique collection of buildings and streetscapes.

Many other charming towns are also nestled across the landscape, set beautifully amongst rolling hills and picturesque valleys.
